Our Sports Day was on Monday, 27 February. The students were engaged in various games, and showed a good sense of developing sportsmanship. It was a great day! Try these movement videos at home. The students are familiar with the songs, and enjoy these "brain break" actions:
This week in our Science lessons we are looking at how materials can change when heat and cooling are applied. To show the changes that occur in heating, we followed the simple "Mug Cake" recipe. The activity also provided connection points to other subjects:
Below is the recipe for the students to try at home:
We further explored the effect of heating on material properties by observing the changes when body heat is applied. In this experiment the materials used were: ice cubes, chocolate, flour, cheese, carrot and butter. The students held it in their hands, and were able to identify the changes. Ms. Pasha was our guest reader who came to read "The Polite Elephant" by Richard Scarry and "Caps For Sale" by Esphyr Slobodkina. Thank you for coming to visit us and treating us with some good stories Ms. Pasha! As the students said "Please come again next week! We loved it!" The librarian, Mr. Keith, also read a story for us as he does every week. He read the story called "Peanut Butter Homework Sandwiches" by Lisa Broadie Cook. Thank you Mr. Keith, we love listening to your stories each week and Library Time is one of our weekly highlights!
Dear Parents Our week started off with a field trip to the Ice Rink at the Villagio Mall in Doha. Our class, along with Ms. Nelly's class, left Al Khor on the cold and crisp Sunday morning. When we arrived at the Ice Rink the guard and skating coaches were there ready to receive us. The students put on their helmets, gloves, and ice skates; and then the real fun began. At first most of the students were hesitant, but the push-seals helped them to face the challenge of balancing on an ice surface. Here are some pictures of the day: We shared our reflections of the field trip through talk, and then writing about it.
Dear Parents We are learning how to manage feelings in Unit 3 of the SecondStep programme. We tuned into the unit topic by identifying different emotions, and recording a daily "feelings graph". After we read the story called "When Sophie Gets Angry - Really, Really Angry..." by Molly Bang, the students were keen to share their thoughts and ideas through talk; folllowed by writing and drawing. You can listen to and read Sophie's story here. The SecondStep lesson "Calming Down Anger" guides the students to develop the "Belly Breathing" technique, and encourages them to use this technique in their interactions with others. Watch a video about "Belly Breathing" here. Take the time at home to talk with your child about what "Belly Breathing" is, and what they should do when they feel strong emotions. Click on each picture for different ideas to support children learning to manage their emotions: Please note that when I wrote the students' idea on the anchor chart "What can you do when you feel angry?", the finger clicking and dancing was suggested and agreed upon by the students. Here are two of our class favourite songs that will be sure to warm you up in this cold weather:
