What is happening in term 1?
In our first Unit we will be naming and constructing geometric figures.
This unit consists of:
* points, lines and line segments
* angles, triangles and quadrilaterals
* parallelograms
* polygons
* drawing circles using a compass
* hexagon and triangle constructions
WEEK 1-4
We are exploring geometry in the first unit of the new year. Specifically we will explore quadrilaterals and polygons as well as practice constructing circles. This will be be extended during the Art lessons where we will use circles creatively to develop beautiful circle designs.
Unit 1 Assessment:
The following will be covered in the Unit 1 Assessment:

The following will be covered in the Unit 1 Assessment:
- Addition (SRB 10-11)
- Subtraction (SRB 12-15)
- Points and line segments (SRB 90)
- Rays and lines (SRB 90)
- Parallel lines and segments (SRB 94)
- Line segments, rays and lines (SRB 95)
- Polygons (SRB 96-97)
- Quadrangles (SRB 99-100)
Week 5
On Tuesday 18 October we will do our assessment on Unit 1. The skills that we will be testing is listed in week 4.
We will start the Unit 2 investigation. The main focus of this unit is on Numbers and organizing Data.
Week 7
This week we will mainly be focusing on collecting data and ways that we can record this data.
Students will be doing some fun activities to create tally charts and basic bar and line graphs.
Towards the end of the week we will focus on mental math. This is very important for the students to know their tables and easy adding and subtracting. Please ensure that you practice this with you child every day.
There are many interesting online math games to play. If you go to Google and search for INTERACTIVE MATH GAMES you will discover many sites where you can let your child practice math in a fun way.

During week 13 (week 1 of term 2) we will complete unit 3.
We will investigate:
3.8 - A guide for solving number stories
3.9 - True of false number sentences
3.10 - Parenthesis in number sentences
3.11 - Open sentences
We will conclude this unit by doing a formal assessment during week 14

Week of January 22 - January 26
During this week we will be investigating decimal fractions, what they represent and how we use them in real life. We will be using the base ten blocks to discover why we have decimals and how we show them on the place value chart. We will also be adding and subtracting numbers that include decimal numbers.
